About

Sarah Gavigan has been an entrepreneur in the music licensing space for close to 10 years.

After owning and running her own talent agency for 7 years, Gavigan was drawn to the burgeoning world of music licensing by a conversation started in a van in Iceland in 1999. The conversation with Eric Hilton of Thievery Corporation led Sarah to understand that Indies were interested in finding a way to get their music to brands and agencies. In 2000 Ten Music was born to provide exactly that service to the growing Indie music community.

“It was not a matter of if, but when. It was obvious that music licensing was to become the next major source or revenue for the music industry, and I wanted to find a way to enable the Indies to be at the front of the game.”

Ten Music pioneered a business model that enabled representation for Indies, allowing their music access to the brightest and best in the vast national Advertising network. The company placed well over 1000 artists and bands to commercials in the last 9 years.

“Licensing was not very popular either with Artists or Brands when we began in 2000,” Gavigan laughs, “Agency Creatives and Producers either felt is was somehow too risky, or that Indie music was somehow lesser than major label music.”

It didn’t take long before Gavigan’s new company was the de facto for music licensing in Advertising.  In the 10 years since the company was formed, Gavigan and her team placed music for brands such as Nissan, Ford, Target, Payless, Microsoft, Samsung, Adidas, Nike, and many more.

In 2005 Gavigan stepped forward again into un-chartered territory by creating HANK™, an online music supervisor.

Today Gavigan is consulting for Agencies and Brands on music licensing, teaching at UCLA,  running HANK™, and writing about her experiences in Music Licensing and the Music Industry.
